  • The Seventh Annual Board Examinations in Neurology were completed on 20 February 2014, culminating in the certification of five (5) new neurologists.
  • A total of nineteen (19) neurologists have been fully trained and board certified since inception of the Addis Ababa University Department of Neurology Residency Training Program.
  • All nineteen neurology graduates have remained in Ethiopia, most on staff in the Addis Ababa University Department of Neurology.
  • Three neurologists previously relocated to start training units or departments in the University Medical Centres in Awassa, Gondar and Nazareth, Ethiopia.
  • Three of the current graduates will start neurology units at the University Medical Centres in Jimma (two neurologists) and Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
  • One of the 2014 graduates will attend the University of Geneva, Switzerland for an epilepsy fellowship, then return to the Addis Ababa University Department of Neurology.
  • One of the 2014 graduates will attend a neurophysiology fellowship at the University of Siena, Italy.
  • A University of Geneva, Switzerland epileptologist is currently practicing full-time in the Addis Ababa University Department of Neurology teaching EEG for a period of one year.
  • Eight physicians were accepted into the first year of the neurology residency training program.
  • The Global NeuroCare Board of Directors held the third annual meeting on 20 February 2014 in Addis Ababa.
  • The United Nations Economic and Social Council granted Special Consultative status to Global NeuroCare.
  • The University of Siena, Italy Department of Neurology provides a standing neurophysiology fellowship for the Ethiopian residents, contingent upon independent funding (Two residents have received scholarship funding from the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology).
  • The University of Wisconsin Department of Neurology anticipates entering into a reciprocal training arrangement for their residents to rotate in Ethiopia, and two Ethiopian residents to train in Wisconsin every year.
  • The Mayo Clinic International Health Program accepted the AAU Department of Neurology as a “Mayo-designated site” for training of their neurology residents.
  • The AAU Department of Neurology is a member of the Council of Presidents of the World Association for Medical Law.
  • Drs. Berna Arda (University of Ankara, Turkey), James C. Johnston (Global NeuroCare) and Knut Wester (University of Bergen, Norway and Haukeland Hospital) will present the Third Legal Medicine and Medical Ethics Conference later in the year.
  • Dr. Arturo provides ongoing visits to teach at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia Department of Neurology.
  • The San Paolo Hospital in Milan, Italy expressed interest in providing epilepsy teaching support in Addis Ababa, and discussions are in progress.
